Transportation in New York City
Transportation in New York City
Getting around New York City can be a daunting task. Traffic and crowds, combined with confusion and getting lost can make even the most pleasant visit to New York City a nightmare. But it doesn't have to be that way! New York has more than enough public transport options for your comfort and to help you navigate the city like a native.

From taxis and trains, to buses, subways and your own two feet, here is the info and tips you need to get going around New York City. In New York City mass transit generally falls into two categories, buses and subways.

Buses
Buses are considered to be most convenient modes of transport here as they run daily between the city and JFK International Airport. Bus maps are available at subway and train stations, and well-marked bus stops have 'Guide-a-Ride' maps showing the stops and nearby landmarks. Exact fare of $1.50 is required, payable using either coins or a subway token. Children under 44" tall ride for free, senior citizens and disabled people ride for a reduced fare.
If you want more information history, check out the MTA's web site on the New York Buses. Site: http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us/nyct/bus/index.html

Subways
New York is infamous for its allegedly dangerous subway. Yet, it is considered to be the most safest and most reliable way around town and Manhattan. Metro card is the primary method of fare payment that allows you access to the subway. Metro cards can be bought on a pay-per-ride basis for an unlimited ride basis. A 1-day Fun Pass costs only $4. Children under 44"cm get free ride and senior citizens and disabled people ride for a reduced fare.

Train
New Jersey's Port Authority Trans-Hudson trains are a separate-fare system running from Manhattan to Newark and northern New Jersey. Ferries run up the Hudson River Valley, from Midtown to Yankee Stadium and from Hoboken to the World Financial Center. NY Waterway is a local ferry company that operates ferries from New York to Tarrytown, Weehawken, Hoboken, Jersey City, Long Island Queens, and the Liberty Science Center. They also offer sightseeing cruises. They have two docks in Manhattan, one at 38th Street and one near the World Financial Center. For more information call (800) 533-3779.

Taxis/Cabs
New York Taxis serve as quick and easy means of transport though they are expensive. If you must tip and are genuinely impressed a minimum tip of 50 cents will be more than enough. Also known as cabs, they are required to take you to your destination and incase they don’t please record the ID number from any cabs that you have problems with and report them to the Taxi and Limousine Commission. Cabs are cash only and it's a good idea to have small bills. While cabs are relatively expensive for a single person, they can actually be a bargain with 3 or more riders.
To file a complaint or report lost property, call the TLC at the following number: (212) 692-8294. For more information on taxi's in NYC, visit Transportation Department's site. Site: http://www.ci.nyc.ny.us/html/tlc/home.html

Rent - A - Car
Driving around in your own car is not recommended in New York, as the traffic is awful, the parking costs are astronomical and atrocious thefts make it unsafe. Preferably opt for the New York car rentals that are comfortable though relatively expensive. You’ll have to budget at least $95 that is inclusive of tax and insurance for a medium-sized car. If you really must rent a car, you'll need a license and a major credit card.
There are certain laws and rules of the road for New York that you should be aware of before driving into the city. For complete information on these laws, visit the DMV's site. Site: http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/index.htm
