There are reasons to visit New York in any season but the best time to visit depends on your primary reason of visit to New York. Fall is the best season to visit New York as the foliage is in full glory and the temperatures of 60°- 72° F/15-22° C predominate. Nights are cool but temperatures may dip. Winter snowfall can be very heavy as the temperatures drop down to mid 20s° F/-12° to -4° C. especially in the Snow Belt along Lakes Erie and Ontario so bring along the warm woollies! In the summer, visitors will encounter pleasantly warm-to-hot temperatures on summer forays to the in some areas. Temperatures in the upper 70s° F/25° C to mid 80s° F/29° C are common in all but the higher elevations. The state as a whole averages more than 40 in/102 cm per year. Spring near Lake Ontario and Lake Erie is usually cool.
